  • Most Nurses Deal With Workplace Violence
    Channel3000.com (Madison, WI) (08/06/09)

A recent survey conducted by the Emergency Nurses Association found that more than half of the 3,000 nurses who responded had experienced physical violence while on the job. In fact, the survey found that one in four of those nurses say they have been physically assaulted more than 20 times in the last three years. In order to prevent these types of attacks, some hospitals have encouraged nurses to get trained in non-violent crisis intervention and self-defense or hired their own uniformed security staff. Other hospitals; however, have taken staff and patient safety a step further by instituting special security plans. For example, the emergency department at the University of Wisconsin Hospital (UW Health) is equipped with ceiling lights that change color according to the department's security status. A green light means there is no security threat, a yellow light indicates there may be a problem, and a red light means no visitors are permitted into the treatment area and extra security personnel are summoned.
