Senior Living Security Network Seeking To Grow

(December 2005) Thirteen of the top senior living facilities in the Rochester area have banded together to share information on resident security, protection best practices, and security incidents and trends. Now, the Senior Living Security Network is seeking to increase its membership to improved its information sharing. So, administrators and security directors of all senior living facilities in the area have been invited to an annual information luncheon Wednesday, December 14, at Grappa Ristorante, 145 Main Street in Fairport.
According to network president Fred Van Scott, the group meets six times a year and at other times as needed. They also are in constant contact via phone, fax and e-mail. Van Scott is the former security manager for Episcopal Senior Living Communities.
Van Scott says, "We treasure our senior citizens, but we know they represent one of the most vulnerable segment of society. Older citizens look to senior living facilities to protect them, as well as look after their health needs." He adds that protecting seniors has changed significantly in recent years. He says that seniors are more independent and more mobile, yet those who live in senior living facilities have to be protected with the same diligence as those in skilled nursing facilities.
Van Scott notes, too, that many baby boomers will soon have need for one of the several levels of senior care. This means that his members have to begin planning now for the increased number of clients that they have to protect.
One network member, Frank Pisciotta, serves as a consulting resource to the group. Pisciotta is president of Business Protection Specialists, an international security consulting firm headquartered in Canandaigua.
Pisciotta notes that his firm provides the local network with an expert perspective. "Many of the people responsible for security in senior living facilities have other responsibilities," he says, "and do not necessarily have the time to develop and deploy all of the programs required to keep seniors secure. Networks such as the Senior Living Security Network enable information to be shared without having to reinvent the wheel."
"We are not involved with day to day tactics," Pisciotta continues, "so we can objectively look at the strategy of security and emergency response plans and provide executives with a different perspective."
Much of the information Pisciotta shares with the local network is gained from working with individual senior living and healthcare facilities in other areas of the country.
